A Fair To Remember
My childhood memories includes our yearly outing at the beginning of school term to the Michigan State Fair. My parents complained about prices, parking, and purchasing elephant ears for me and my three younger siblings, but our smiles made it all worth while. This is where we learned about agriculture and animals. The Miracle of Life exhibit is gross and exciting all at the same time. Witnessing the birth of live calf at the fair is one of my fondest childhood memories.
Now as a teenager, the Pirate Ship was the ride where all the cool kids hung around while 97.9 was always blasting to keep the fair-goers hype in the lines. The teenagers had to get fly for the fair so that they could get noticed from kids other schools. Before I started to drive how my friends and I would coordinate whose parents were going to drop us off and pick us up and making sure we were standing on Woodward when it was pick up time. Getting yelled at in the car because we were always hard headed and never was outside when we said we were. I am cracking up while I am going back down memory lane.
I remember my husband (he was just a guy I was dating at the time) spending almost $50.00 on some game to win me some overstuffed animal. NEVER DID WIN.
The State Fair always had a hot lineup of great talent for their concerts. I have enjoyed the performances of the Isley Brothers, Ashanti, Drew Hill, 112, and one of my favorite groups of all time, NEW EDITION! Oh yes, my girls Steph, Tiff, Kyra, Roz and Nat rushed off work so we could get good seats and we were grooving to NE HEARTBREAK. That was just 5 years ago.
Now that I am a parent, for the past 4 years I have enjoyed taking my little one to the fair. Never did I once think that it would be no more for us to enjoy each year. I want my son to have his own memories of the the wonderful elephant ears, shoestring french fries, or the fresh lemonade stands. The experience of enjoying the last of the summer air with his friends hanging out by the PirateShip or the Tilt-A-Whirl.
HERE ARE REASONS YOU SHOULD HEAD TO THE STATE FAIR!
1. Grab and soak in some American History. The Michigan State Fair is 160 years old and the oldest in the United States.
2. While you are enjoying some of the great food the fair has to offer, you can watch a free Disney movie at the Hudson Auditorium. They have several showtimes everyday while the Fair is open.
3. See one of the live concerts. Still some of the best entertainment is still available at the Michigan State Fair.
4. ELEPHANT EARS….Should I say more.
5. Check out the miracle of life exhibit, which features pregnant and newborn cows, goats and pigs.
6. Visit a volunteer at the fair and sign their petition to keep the fair running.
7. Just for a good laugh – ride the Pirate Ship.
